Fille du chanteur de country et acteur Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus se découvre très tôt une passion pour la scène. En 2003, à l'âge de onze ans, elle obtient un petit rôle dans la série Doc dans laquelle son père tient le rôle principal. La même année, elle est également créditée au générique de Big Fish de Tim Burton. Elle apparaît aussi dans un clip de la chanteuse Rhonda Vincent, ainsi que dans une émission de télévision présentée par son père. Son nom de scène Miley vient du mot « smiley » (sourire).

Sa carrière démarre réellement quand elle obtient le rôle-titre de la série Hannah Montana, qui est un succès d'audience pour Disney Channel (le premier épisode est regardé par 5,4 millions de téléspectateurs). Elle y incarne une jeune adolescente, Miley Stewart, qui mène une double vie de rock star. Son père incarne quant à lui le rôle de Robbie Ray Stewart, un ancien chanteur de country. Miley Cyrus interprète elle-même les titres de Hannah Montana, dont les deux albums de la bande originale se placent premier des ventes d'albums aux États-Unis la semaine de leur sortie. Son personnage de Hannah Montana apparaît dans un épisode de la série Disney La Vie de palace de Zack et Cody.

En 2007, toujours pour Disney, elle interprète une voix dans un épisode de Kuzco, un empereur à l'école et chante I learned from you pour Le Secret de Terabithia (distribué par Disney aux États-Unis). Elle apparaît aussi brièvement dans la scène finale dans High School Musical 2. Elle remporte également deux Teen Choice Awards, en tant qu'artiste de l'été et meilleure comédienne dans une série télévisée de comédie (pour Hannah Montana). Elle avait déjà été nommée l'année précédente comme révélation de l'année.

À partir du 18 octobre 2007, elle entame une tournée de 54 dates à travers les États-Unis. Intitulé Best of Both Worlds Tour, le spectacle met en scène Miley Cyrus à la fois en tant qu'artiste solo et son personnage de Hannah Montana. Mis en scène par Kenny Ortega (réalisateur des High School Musical), le concert devrait également être filmé en Disney Digital 3D pour être diffusé dans les salles de cinéma la première semaine de février 2008[2]. L'engouement du public pour cette tournée est tel que, pour certaines dates, la totalité des billets se vend en cinq minutes[3], mais une polémique frappe le concert, quand de nombreuses places se retrouvent très rapidement sur le marché noir sur des sites de vente aux enchères, à des prix prohibitifs
